Abstract
Writer¡¯s cramp is a task-specific focal hand dystonia characterized by muscle cramps that accompany execution of the writing task specifically. It is characterized by an abnormally tight grip while writing with progressive difficulty in performing the task as writing continues and poorly responsive to pharmacological therapy. Botulinum toxin is regarded as the most effective treatment of dystonia, but transient weakness of the injected muscles is a common consequence. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been shown to reduce hypertonia in patients with upper motor neuron syndrome without any side effect. The clinical effects of ESWT on dystonia remain unclear. We report a case of 26-year-old female who suffered from right hand dystonia and pain. The symptom was worsened especially during the writing task and treated by extracorporeal shock wave therapy. After twelve sessions of treatment, the patient showed a marked improvement of dystonia and pain.
